If the dead guy purposely knocked the pieces off the board, it's justifiable homicide, and in fact he ought to get a commendation.

I'd expect something like this out of a game of
Risk. Maybe even
Monopoly, what with the evil rich trying to take over the world (or at least Atlantic City).
Not chess, though. Even Kasparov just stalks out of the room after a computer whoops up on him; perhaps in light of this incident he'll take a more Curt Shillingesque approach in the future. ;-)

Police said that the men, who had known each other for 25 years, were arguing over a chess game and other things Familiarity (and too many Arns) breeds contempt.

Well, there you go. Chess and alcohol just don't mix!
How the heck can you play chess when you are drunk anyway?

As a lifelong player gotta say that Americans generally have it wrong about chess players. The normal stereotype is a nerdish girly boy. But chess is a fighting game! The best players are those who are instintively combative and always suspicious of what you're trying to do to me. It wouldn't be unusual even after years of sparring with another player to have that person say "Just play" if the attempt was made to construct a conversation about anything other than the game.

Levittown native bump.

I'd consider stabbing your opponent a bad move.
