Ayatollahs are Shi'ite and a quick glance at Iran clearly illustrates how they rule. There is no way to have a "Shi'ite theocracy" without having rule by ayatollah...

Not all Ayatollas are alike, not all Shiite theocracies are alike. The extreme Ayatollas of Iran never had popular support; the only reason they came to power was because the Soviets backed them and Carter refused to help the Shah.
