Oh, God. I remember I was the last person in the family who was still up. Finally, finally, I heard Bush had won, so I started for bed. I heard that Gore would be making his concession speech momentarily. (Of course, we all know now Gore was getting a cell call while in his limo--and then there was the famous "snippy" phone conversation, but I digress.)
I put on a walkman which had a radio. I wanted to hear at least the beginning of Gore's concession, but I had to have the headphones b/c everyone else was asleep. I waited, and waited, and waited, and waited... finally gave up and fell asleep. I awoke to---well, you KNOW what I awoke to. I awoke to the beginning of WHAT WE WOULD HAVE SEEN FOUR OR EIGHT YEARS EARLIER, IF CLINTON HAD NOT WON OR STOLEN THOSE TWO EARLIER ELECTIONS.

When the election was called for Bush, we were jumping up and down and screaming and laughing and cheering! Our neighbors were laughing at us (the liberals!) from over the wall. We even photographed the TV as it said Bush won! I will never forget that.
And then came that phone call when Gore took back his concession and called Bush snippy.
What an election to have lived through. What a time that was.
I am sure our extended family was not the only one to have a political gag order on it that Thanksgiving. It was like the Civil War for polarizing families.
