"Bill Clinton is an absolute bore. Now for the next 4 years, we all get to listen to him, and we can expect more g_ddamned nonsense."
David Brinkly, election night, 1996
RIP David.

Mr. Brinkley was one of the few who would do his best to cut through the spin and not allow a politician to evade a question. His comment about Clinton was not at all out of character for him. He would treat both conservatives and liberals with the same respect or distain that they deserved based on whether they were frank or evasive in their responses. ABC's Sunday morning show went straight into the hopper when he left.
He will be sorely missed.

correct quote...thank you..
""We all look forward with great pleasure to four years of wonderful, inspiring speeches, full of wit, poetry, music, love and affection, plus more goddamn nonsense. Bill Clinton...has not a creative bone in his body. Therefore, he's a bore, and will always be a bore."
--David Brinkley, on the eve of Clinton's re-election, during "This Week with David Brinkley".

TomServo (Free Illbay!!) Free Illbay? Where? Are supplies limited? Why are they free now? I suppose there was little demand for them at the old price.

Tony Kornhieser just relayed a story about how Brinkley was encouraging Reagan to pick Bush to be his running mate during the 1980 convention. Brinkley noted on the air that Reagan could find Bush at the hotel bar if he wanted to speak with him.

From Wilmington. When my daughter was working there she saw him several times at a restaurent he liked to come to. He was very gracious to those who introduced himself to, but local people gave him his space. He was not liberal by today's standards. One of his big buddies was Bob Strauss. He seems to have had only contempt for Clinton.

Very sad. Even if he was a liberal, he was at least an old school liberal and a gentleman. My daughter and I met him once during a book signing at Marshall-Fields in Chicago. Reporters from the Chicago Tribune took photos of Mr. Brinkley and my little girl together as he was signing our book.

Sorry: I could not resist given the last photo I saw of Brinkley. Actually: he made some very funny comments about Howard Stern that Stern still plays today.

"Bill Clinton has none of it. He has not a creative bone in his body. Therefore he is a bore and will always be a bore." I got giggling then, and still do over that one LOL
To: RepublicanHippy
old school liberalThat would make him a right wing nutcase today
To: stimpyone
Amazing, one of the last old school reporters who would hang out at the bar or track after work looking for real old school news..

This is a loss. Sorry to see him go.

I was a bit disapointed by his memoir, but he was never one to betray confidences and had that Victorian virtue called discretion.

Cronkite Pik............LOL
I grew up with THE HUNTLEY/BRINKLEY REPORT (if thats any indication of my age). Its sad to see him go.
I used to be a big fan of This Week with David Brinkley; then he started to fade and only did a final monolog at the end of the show; then Sam Donaldson took over and Dave quit; now, we've got Stephanopoulous (?!!!). Oh well, we all know we're going to hell in a handbasket.
Parting thought...........................
Anyone want to take any bets they'll ask Cronkite to eulogize David?

He had an air of avuncular comfortableness about him; I truly enjoyed watching his show, stopped cold when he left, never been back.
