Some people want to know the truth, and some people have a set of "beliefs" that they want to continue to believe in no matter what. The second group have to wear a mind-filter to block out anything which disagrees with their avowed belief system.
I come from an ULTRA liberal family and I have heard them in action. As Michael Savage says, liberalism is a mental illness.
