America, The Gulag (Mother of all Euro Gag Alerts)
Washington Post ^ | June 11, 2003 | Anne Applebaum

America, the Gulag By Anne Applebaum Wednesday, June 11, 2003; Page A35

"Do you see any parallels between the security state that George Bush has created in America since 9/11 and the Gulag?" For a moment, the question struck me dumb. It had been put by a BBC radio interviewer, and we were on the air. It seemed impolitic to say, "What a ridiculous question," and I was too surprised to laugh.

Actually this is quite a good article... the gagging is at the European 'chattering classes' and their arrogance not at the author, who dissects the Euro anti-American thinking with some accuracy:

" ... Largely this is because Bush, as a fully paid-up conservative, is at odds with Europe's left-leaning political elites, most of whom hate not only him but also the things with which he is associated, rightly or wrongly, such as a freer rein for the private sector. What they hate, in other words, is his domestic policy, more than his foreign policy.

Hatred of Bush has, in turn, slanted the reporting in the European press. Huge amounts of attention were given to the reports, after the fall of Baghdad, of the looting of the Iraqi state museum, which played into negative stereotypes (anti-culture Americans!). Far less attention has been paid to subsequent discoveries of the museum's treasures, hidden in vaults, safe from looters. Much was made a year or two ago of the administration's apparent lack of interest in Middle East peace (warmongering Americans!). By contrast, there has been relatively little interest in the president's recent trip to the Middle East, which has been widely dismissed as a cynical maneuver."

Right. The article was good -- the gag was directed at the Euros.

The European chattering classes.
They should be spit on, kicked, abused, and humiliated at every turn.
Not reasoned with.

Good article. I read it despite the gag alert, which will drive people away.

"Do you see any parallels between the security state that George Bush has created in America since 9/11 and the Gulag?"

Oh that's rich, considering that the BBC interviewer lives in a country where he can't own a handgun, and where security cameras are pointing his way almost everywhere he goes...

”... the refusal to call the Guantanamo Bay captives "prisoners of war," which happens to be what they are.”

Ah yes, and military combatants and terrorists, the liberal press and media still refuse to call the enemy what they are. A.N.S.W.E.R., Ramsey Clark and lately the likes of John Dean are greatly responsible in the United Staes, Britain etc. for carping at those who have given them the freedom to bad mouth their countries and their governments.

Good article exposing the spin and propaganda from these gutless and forever whiny do nothings who would oppose their own families for empty reasons, mainly getting paid to protest. Chattering classes are simple people who have no education or history to ground them and tenured professors who live in a dream world leading them.

Some opinions on the Euro-weenies:

"Well, as a member of the stock exchange, I would suck their brains out with a straw, sell the widows, and go into South African zinc."

"Well, I'm an accountant, and consequently too boring to be of interest."

"I'd split their nostrils open with a boat hook."

"We think they ought to be kicked in the upper lip with a steel-tipped toe cap, don't we, girls?"

Hm. They all sound good to me.

(From Monty Python, of course.)

that immigrants are far better treated in America than in Britain
Even if true, so what? Immigration has become a suicidal religious fetish in the West.

In every country in Europe you can go to jail for uttering or writing politically incorrect statements, another thing this author didn't think of, perhaps because she approves of it.
