Let's Be "Fair," Give Child Tax Credit To the Childless (Rush Limbaugh) compassion defined as gifts

Let's Be "Fair," Give Child Tax Credit To the Childless

June 9, 2003

The Democrat proposal to give the child tax credit to people who don't make enough money to pay taxes, created a stir in the e-mails and on the phone lines Monday. Remember two things: #1 - Senators Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) voted against extending this credit to low-income families. #2 - Republican tax policy has removed 13 million Americans from the tax rolls, moving the burden for paying income taxes onto the upper brackets. The downside of this is that fewer people have a stake in pushing or voting for tax cuts.

I received an e-mail from a couple who said: "We are conservatives, and we own a business. We've heard your arguments against granting the extra tax credit to people making under $16,000 a year. You note that they pay no taxes. Rush, I'm sorry, but we just can't agree with you on this one. If you have children, you should receive the same tax credit as anyone else." I wrote the couple back to ask, "If someone in your business has a baby, do you give them a raise automatically?" Similarly, car companies are giving away cash rebates - why should they be limited just to people who buy cars? This could be a Mars vs. Venus thing, but I took calls finding men and women on both sides of this.

To let these Democrats get away with blaming Republicans and the president is the mistake. The GOP should not go along with what is, in essence, a welfare bill just because fighting it is supposedly a political loser. I'd ask you conservatives who want to sell out principle on this issue to remember this when the GOP caves to the left on an issue you care about. If "compassion" is going to be defined as gifts, taken from taxpayers and given to non-taxpayers, where does it stop? How can you oppose the government starting any new program like the guaranteed minimum income of $100K a year?

George McGovern ran on a guaranteed income in 1972 - and conservatives now support the concept! "What? No we don't, Rush!" Yes, yes, you do, because this is the same kind of thinking as McGovern's. It's driving the prescription drug benefit, too. If you've lived long enough to retire in this country, you have "contributed" and you therefore have a claim on the earnings of your fellow Americans. It's sort of like the minimum wage. If we're going to raise it to $10, why not $20 or $50? When you get to the point where you say, "That's too high," I have got you, because why is anything too high? "But, Rush, the Democrats will kill us on this." They attack us anyway, no matter what we do! This is not a sales tax cut, or FICA cut. You can cut those taxes and I'd applaud it, but don't call this a tax cut when it's not.

Want to Help This Guy Out?

June 9, 2003

A hot topic on Monday's show was extending the child income tax credit to people who don't pay income taxes. If you support the government taking money from income taxpayers and giving it to non-income taxpayers in the name of a "tax cut," then get out your checkbook! Yes, it's time to answer this e-mail in the super-secret, Rush 24/7 subscribers-only e-mail box:

Hey, Rush!

Just wondering - would you mind giving all these callers who agree with the welfare bill "tax cut" my address? My wife and I are expecting in September. It would be great if they could just send us some money. If they don't mind supporting people just because they have children, why bother with the government as middleman?

Just send it to me directly. Then my wife won't have to work part-time once the child is born. We won't have to worry about child care during the day, and could maybe go out and buy some health care insurance for the whole family as well. Thanks for getting the word out, Rush. We really need these people's help.

My name is Barry. I live in Naperville, Illinois, and if anybody wants to give me money for my kid, please feel free to give them my address. Please ask them if they're going to do this, to send the check either Federal Express or priority mail.

Thanks again, Rush. I appreciate it.

I'm keeping this note on my desk for any of you who support the child tax credit being extended to people who don't pay taxes. If you would like give out of your paycheck what you're asking Congress to take from the paychecks of other taxpayers without asking them, then send this man and his wife some cash. Let me know you've written the check, and I'll give you the address. You're going to have to prove you're going to send them the money, by the way. I'm not going to give you the address just so you can hassle this nice couple. You must prove your "compassion" to me, and not define it by voting money out of other people's pockets.

Rush babbled on and on about this for over an hour today.

He just doesn't get it!

NO ONE CARES........

He acts as tho the world will come to an end if really poor working people get a handout from the government. In the meantime, many of us take mortgage deductions, travel deductions for business, use our frequent flyer miles for free travel, even tho the company paid for the original flight.

He sounds so mean spirited......ENOUGH ALREADY!

IMHO, the less the government has in it's control, the better I like it. These people are not welfare recipients, they are WORKING!!!

You're probably right. I never listen to Rush anyway. He does have a point about the precedent that is set by things like this though. Where does it end?

He has a point, but it's a lost cause and not worth ranting on and on and on about it. It's a done deal.

He tried to use the analogy of auto makers giving $1,000 rebates.....said they should give the $1,000 to everyone even if they don't buy a car........RUSH IS OUT OF HIS MIND!

So?
They still don't pay taxes.
Some people are more equal than others?
They do not have the obligation to pay for government services enjoyed by all?

They can't even afford 10 bucks?

Give me a break!

From my limited exposure to Limbaugh I have gathered that he tends to rant on and on quite often.

I still say no "tax cuts" for non-taxpayers, though.

Would you show me where in the tax code that you have to be working to file taxes and get an unerrand income taxe check. Also, each of these people get baby setting and preschool free, that's 7500.00 per kid.

I hope no one noticed that Rush called this a welfare bill.

I was kinder today and called it a negative tax rate for a select segment of voters

Please explain how one can have an income tax credit applied to zero income taxes paid---right, it can't be done.

Now, if you still want to give a $400 handout by taking money away from those who earned it to those who did not, we can debate the merits of that--but it is not a tax cut or a tax credit, and it is not correct to continue calling it that.

Again I say, quadruple the tax credit for everyone, start calling it a "school voucher", and declare victory.
