What, exactly, does Maestri expect the bishops to do?
The only thing that can be "done" about abortion is in the judicial area, and that involves overturning Roe v. Wade. This, of course, would still leave certain states, like New York and Maryland, which would sanction abortion.
Excommunicating Catholic politicians is fine, but it will do nothing to lessen the number of abortions. It's showboating.
And, excommunicating Teddy Kennedy won't change the way he votes at all, on abortion or anything else.

A nice start would be to just publicly repudiate the politicians in both diocesan and secular newspapers, when they vote on Abortion issues. Next, they can disallow these same politicians from attending any events on Catholic properties, i.e. hospitals and universities, etc. Two very simple actions would make many happy.
Most bishops can't even do that. I would be very happy if mine did.

You are decidedly wrong to assume the excommunication of politicians will do NOTHING to slow the holocaust. There are millions of practicing Catholics (not CINOs) who will understand the 'final straw'. The leadership of a Republic, if not held accountable to higher power, will not see the utility in supporting true pro-life legislation. If the politicians are held accountable to their professed faith, the people will elect accordingly, rather than abandon their faith.

WRONG! It's justice, not showboating. But I suppose it doesn't fit into the anything-goes, modernist, I'm-OK/you're-OK (on the way to hell) mentality.
Justice on this earth scares some people. What should scare them is the justice that is both inescapable and everlasting--the justice brought on by lack of justice here on earth. Decrying truth and justice as "Showboating" will not save anyone from the truth, sinkspur. It only serves to perpetuate the evil in a comfortable, new order way.
For crying out loud!

They should be excommunicated because they do not belong in the Church, not because it is some means of temporal duress.
You've lost your compass.
