Ashcroft made a lot of unfortunate promises during his hearings, as I remember very well, but promises made under duress are not enforceable.

I'm a little surprised, though. The Bush administration has gone out of it's way to be nice to homosexuals. I guess Ashcroft didn't get the memo.

I'm not surprised. From what I've seen, the president has treated people who are homosexual like human beings. His stated position is the same as mine: He doesn't believe that one's sexual orientation should be a political issue. So while he will treat homosexuals the same way that he would treat anyone else, he's not going to give them any special treatment.
