I remember SECDED (Single Error Correction Double Error Detection). I worked on Scope, NOS/BE and NOS operaqting systems in the 70's and 80's for Babcock & Wilcox, Martin Marietta Data Systems, University Computing Company, and yes, Control Data Corporation. Actually went skiing with Dave Callendar who wrote the MACE OS with Mansfield. Wy wife was a networks export who started in Arden Hills with CDC.

I think I'll give FR a rest. All this bad news is giving me a migrane!

There are some things, like research and defense that are just better if done and OWNED collectivly than not done at all or owned by another Bill Gates. Yeah! What has Bill Gates ever done to improve things? I'm sure the government could do a much better job of developing and distributing software than he can. Let's put Ted Kennedy in charge of Microsoft immediately.

I feel frustrated, at times, with the inaccuracy of weather forecasts, but I believe that the field of meteorology is extremely complex and is going through some technological growing pains. It's like any scientific field, where the more variables you learn to identify and monitor, the more complicated the equation becomes.
I am so proud that we may have a college-bound meteorologist in our family. The hard work of my nephew as well as the support and prayers of all those who love this wonderful teenager will hopefully carry him through a very tough degree, every bit as demanding in its coursework as engineering. He definitely has the "weather gene" from my mom, a long-time Weather Channel watcher who used to sit with this grandchild and discuss the storm they were experiencing while watching the radar mirroring it on TV, and also from my dad, a former AF navigator who started his college career with a natural transition into meteorology, later segueing into engineering.
FYI, homeschoolers, a wonderful introductory meteorology book is "The Weather Book" by Jack Williams of USA Today fame. I bought this for my nephew last year and couldn't put it down.

It's just amazing how horrible the English skills of so-called "journalists" are these days. I guess proper use of the language (not to mention veracity) is very much secondary to crusading for the rights of wealthy bull dykes to play golf at Augusta National. Good grief.
