Funny, I thought some on here are blaming the school - teachers - for not identifying the gun as being low caliber (pellet - harmless in some regards). Maybe they need further educating on guns so they can effectivley monitor children better, since obviously parents don't care. Is that what you want? Sounds like bigger Govt and more Govt control if you ask me.

Is it too much to ask that parents raise their children instead of defaulting to the schools?

Have taken your advice to heart. We are homeschooling now. And not just reading, writing, and arithmetic, also gun safety, hunting, shooting.

Don't intend to let these inept government run kid prisons corrupt my children and endanger their lives.

We're not that far apart. I'm saying that all the school needs to do is call the kid's parents up to the school to "discuss" the situation. BUT, that is not what will happen.

If you don't think that 10 to 14 year old kids are going to try to play hooky at least once your dreaming. The origanal poster said that this was a rural area that the field in question he had known to be used for hunting.

The kid should be in trouble for playing hooky, not because of the pellet gun, or go-cart, or mini-bike, or any other TOY, but for not being home in bed sick or in school where he belongs.

The school is making a big deal out of this because of a pellet GUN, the pre-curser to the child taking out the whole school with an ASSULT CANNON! OH, PANIC! What happens next with the parents and kid is more than likely going to be WAY overboard. This may be the first and only time the kid played hooky, but are the parents going to get the chance to handle the matter, I don't think so.
