[history]
Pressure is increasing on Gov. Gray Davis to sign a measure approved Wednesday by the state Senate that would allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses -- with unions joining the list of supporters.
If the measure clears the Assembly -- and supporters are confident it will -- Davis for the second consecutive year will have to deal with the politically sensitive issue.

Maybe if the bill fails the will go back to Mexico?
To: TheWillardHotel
The only way they will go back to Mexico is at the point of a gun.

I'll support this bill so long as the DMV gets the authority to detain and hand-over to the INS, people who are in this country illegally.

Excellent! We're over the halfway mark already! I only hope that all the signatures get counted properly. I have a sick sense that many will be "misplaced." Just my criminal mind at work. Any news as to how many have actually been turned in?

The unions opposed last year's measure on grounds it was too restrictive. It covered only illegal immigrants who were in the process of becoming legal residents. Now that the eligibility has been broadened, The new SB 60 repeals existing requirements that applicants for a state-issued ID card or drivers license show proof of legal residence in the US.
Davis vetoed the old AB 60 because it didn't have enough security provisions; the new SB 60 is even worse.

Sen. Tom McClintock, R-Simi Valley, called the bill "utterly useless" and said its passage would "destroy the validity of every other California driver's license." If Tom McClintock were governor, we wouldn't need to worry that the legislature were passing such awful legislation, since he wouldn't let such dangerous bills leave his office without a veto.

Joe Davis = Gutless Wonder
I sure wish that McClintock would run in the recall election.
