Home-schooled students no longer would have to take periodic achievement tests under a bill that won final legislative approval Tuesday, but Gov. Ted Kulongoski warned that he may veto the measure.

Senate Bill 761 cleared the Senate on a 21-9 vote after supporters said it would free parents from an unnecessary state requirement that doesn't apply to children in private schools.

The teachers unions own Kulongoski. They need to get their own house in order before worrying about homeschoolers.

government involvement testing in MOST cases is an un needed expense on all sides, as most homeschool curriculums include testing that is more relevant than the politically correct Gov. exams.

The other problem is that state exams are subject to ideological bias. For instance, if you fail to include sufficient fisting instruction, as compared to that provided in the public schools, your student may not do as well on the state exam. :-)

I bet the tests would show the home schooled kids consistently ahead of public schooled kids by two or three years.

saying that it would allow irresponsible or incompetent parents to keep their child out of school and provide them with "no education at all."

In my estimation, these are the kind of parents that can't wait for the public schools to take their kids off their hands.
