The Communist Party organizing in Tennessee and the south took several turns.

In the 1920s they targeted Afro-Americans but had little success in the south because blacks then had an especially strong Christian focus.

In the 30s the CP started the Highlander Folk School in east Tennessee which was celebrated by the NY-type commies but their free sex stuff alarmed the quite a few nearby Tennesseans. Due to community pressure this outfit moved from Swannee TN to Knoxville. MLK visited there at some point in time.

As to the political Tenneessee Gores, they were poor as church mice until the messenger from the Kremlin, Armand Hammer, took enough care to make them well off. This occurred in the late 40s.
