Oh I agree that the INS, border patrol, etc. are all at fault. But there's also a need for cheap labor. Let's be honest. Americans- even those who are out of work, are far too prideful to go work in the fields for minimum wage. Heck, you can barely get people to work at MacDonald's. But if you take all the folks on welfare, put them to work in these lower-end jobs, there will be no need for illegals.
I think the problem with illegals and our welfare society go hand-in-hand. Too many people wanting a hand out, and even fewer willing to get off their butts and do anything about it. Even worse, the federal gov't fosters this dependency. And all of us pay for it.

If they are out of work because they won't take a job at minimum wage then they deserve to be poor. I live in a college town so even McDonald's has no trouble finding help. Just about any minimum wage job is filled by a college student or a high school kid. Most of the fast food restaurants here actually pay a bit more than minimum wage. Last I looked, starting pay was over $7.00/h. Wal-mart and grocery stores are the minimum wage places and are also filled with students. The only fields easy to find work in are the hard labor types. Construction jobs are almost always open but are really only for men. Around here it would suck to be a mother in need of a job with only a high school diploma.

It seems something changes very quickly with the Mexicans once they're given amnesty or legality ----they no longer need to work the fields when it's 105 degrees, they can lay around and watch their novelas all day in an air conditioned government housing project.
