Local deejay becomes part of military media

By Nora Frost , Midland Reporter-Telegram 06/03/2003

From working in civilian media to military media, former local disc jockey "John Shannon" is in Baghdad covering the recovery of war for the government.

Assigned to the public affairs unit in Fort Riley, Kans., John Shannon Wollaston, a member of the Midland High School class of 1986, was deployed in February with the 3rd combat brigade, 1st armored division.

"He was deployed with a video camera, a still camera, a satellite telephone and a M-16," said John L. Wollaston, Wollaston's father.

Wollaston joined the U.S. Army for five years, joined the national guard, then re-enlisted in the Army when the situation in Iraq heated up.

"He didn't re-enlist with the national guard," said Juanita Wollaston, Wollaston's mother. "He knew that's where the news was."

Once a week, Wollaston calls home to talk to his mother, father and four children, Ryan, 13, Joshua 12, Elizabeth, 8 and Rebekka, 6.

His parents said Wollaston began working in radio right out of high school for an oldies station that broadcasted from the basement of Hilton Midland and Towers.

His most recent Midland deejay job was as program director at KCRS KISS FM 103.3.

Though he has a background in music radio, Wollaston has been filing audio news reports, shooting footage and writing stories about happenings after the war.

"The 3rd combat brigade, 1st armored division is doing all the work right now," said Wollaston via a telephone in Baghdad. "Now a lot of it is just reconstruction and maintaining security in Baghdad."

Soldiers have been doing some humanitarian aid such as passing out school supplies to Iraqi children.

"The majority of the people I have come across are glad we are here, helping rebuild their country," Wollaston said.

He tries to check in with the family at least once a week by phone. The family also keeps in touch by e-mail and reading about Wollaston's ventures on the Web.

On Monday, after a few minutes of chatting via satellite phone with his children, the connection was disrupted.

A few minutes later, the phone rang again.

"That's daddy," said Elizabeth as she scampered off.

The children have photos and videos to keep them company until their father returns home.

"I remember when I was little, we had a thumbtack map on the wall, so we could know where dad was," said Ryan.

Ms. Wollaston said she wants people to realize although war coverage is no longer prominent in the news, there is still military in the Middle East.

"News comes and goes like it does. A lot of people don't think much war is going on ... but they are still there."
