A National ID would have serious long term consequences.

We already have laws on the book that, if enforced, would drive the illegals back to Mexico.

Imagine if a McDonalds were closed down for violating labor laws by hiring the illegals that they do. A single store can cost well over $1 million to build. Imagine the owner losing it because she knowingly continued to hire illegals.

Imagine if the state's were held accountable for giving welfare to illegals. Many state's forbid asking citizen status by social workers.

Imagine if the Border patrol was given adequate funding.

Imagine if local law enforcement could detain illegals.

Imagine if selling cars or renting homes to illegals were actually prosecuted.

All of these items are on the books, but none are enforced.

Let's face it. If the only way an American president can get elected is through Mexican votes, we have a war to be waged.

That would be the brute force method.

As I preach time and time again, enforcing the current laws, while only beefing up the border to stop the drug trade, will send the illegals back south. Why? Because they would have no jobs, no cars, no homes, and no welfare.

We don't need to mine the border, we just need to stop the incentive to cross it.

For stopping the drug trade, that can be done with less brute force and more intelligent thinking. We have the capability to use surveillance techniques that are low on manpower and can direct manpower where it needs to go to apprehend the bad guys. No mines, no tanks, no snipers. Just simple, cost effective border enforcement. The technology exists, we just need to start using it.

As a side note, I have many friends in law enforcement, including family. All of them say that the border patrol guys are stand up people. They have some faults, but overall they seem to deserve our respect and support. I say we give them that and increase their front line budget.
