Nearly 30 illegal immigrants found in sweltering shack
(6/03/03 - HOUSTON) More than two dozen other illegal immigrants were found Tuesday afternoon, this time in a small building in east Houston. They were discovered after someone reported seeing several men in a truck acting suspiciously.
Houston police were called to investigate the shack on Cesar Chavez and Ave I after a witness saw four people getting out of a truck and going inside. When officers arrived they found 29 people inside the metal roofed building.
Police say it was at least 98 degrees in the shack, but all of the people are in good condition. The suspected illegal immigrants include a 10-year-old boy and his mother, both from El Salvador. Police have them in custody.
Meanwhile federal immigration officers took the other 27 men into custody. Federal officials also arrested one man who police say may have been involved in the smuggling ring that brought the people into the United States. Police do not know for sure, but suspect the people in the shack may have been held against their will.
"We have seen cases like this in the past, where people are brought to this country and the prices are jacked up for bringing them in," explained HPD Captain Vicki King. "They are held against their will until their relatives come and pay the extra money. They didn't know they owed the extra money, and that certainly is a concern to us."
Police do not know how long the people were in the shack, but neighbors told us the illegal immigrants were dropped off Monday night or early Tuesday morning
Remarkable!
Was one of them missing a leg?
29-1/2 of them? 29-5/8? What?
The Illegals will probably sue the USA because the shack wasn't air conditioned.
