I think you're correct ... He's in the Declaration of Independence (if memory serves) as "Nature's God" and "Creator" ...

Yup, which doesn't have the force of law, but is the document that describes to the world who we are and what we stand for, lest anyone forget. I don't think any Constitution could come close to making such a statement.
