Hello. My second show as co-anchor will include Barbara's piece on Jane Pauley's leaving NBC, Deborah Roberts talking to Carnie Wilson about her photo spread in Playboy, and Bob Brown's update on a cheerleader who has no arms. Again, no "Give me a Break." But I lead the show with a "Family Fix" about parents who spy on their kids. Some parents use motion sensors to catch kids sneaking out of the house, GPS systems that tell them where their kids are (or whether they are speeding in the car), and computer software that lets parents read what the kids are doing on the internet. We'll show the tiny cameras that catch kids smoking, drinking, stealing from Mom's purse, and more.

I understand why nervous parents want to spy, but every expert we consulted said spying on your kids is a terrible idea. An expert offers alternatives.

Last week's piece on Arab and Muslim comics brought some nice comments:

"The segment on 'terrorist humor' was great. The average American knows very little about people of Middle Eastern heritage or what they've been going through all these years, especially since 9/11." — Kathy Barjesteh, Nampa, Idaho "Enjoyed John Stossel's segment on Mid-easterner's humorous criticism of our President and about their own 'profiling' problems while living here. It's needed." — Gene Roberts

But also plenty like this:

"... I was very angry with John Stossel.... He looked to me as if he was angry at the actions of these comedians, and completely missed their point. It went right over his head. I think this man is shallow, and very stupid." — Jorge Buch, Alberta, Canada "... Who were you trying to reach with the slanderous, criminally abhorrent diatribe tonight? Mr. Stossel your antiquated discourse this evening conveyed a level of ignorance few have attained ... Words like yours do nothing to help these oppressed and abandoned people, humans living in conditions white America wouldn't allow their pet in, yet you cast dispersions on a people you do not know, judge people on what your limited knowledge allows, culminating in abject stupidity as you claim their jokes are un-patriotic...." — Duke Kahanomoko

What? Apparently, what I think I say on TV is different from what many people hear. Do people not understand "devil's advocate" questions? I was sympathetic to the comics; I liked what they said. This week, the comics told us they liked the piece. Nevertheless, I got plenty such angry e-mail. And this, about my becoming co-anchor:

"You happened to mention that you have failed to accumulate even one negative comment about John Stossel ... well, here's one: I hate John. I hope he walks out into the street one day and gets hit by a bus. If that fails to kill him, I hope a horde of ravenous, cannibalistic hoboes spots him lying on the pavement, and accept that as a free meal ticket. If he should happen to break free from the starving grasp of homelessness, I wish him nothing more than to be trampled to death by a stampede of monkeys riding on goats. So here's to you, John! ... have a nice life. (by 'nice', I mean slow and painful, and by 'life', I mean death.) :)" — Jonathan Smith

Typical lib RAT rant. The spitting and mouth foaming comes through even in print.

I don't have a TV hooked up, but I might show up at a friends house about 10 if I knew this show was on.
