Wow, I'm surprised neither school you went to had a uniform. Every Catholic school I knew of had a uniform.
You were lucky. :-)

It may even get worse...remember the Dixie Chicks said they want to be "role models" for young women.

isthisnickcool : But what can you expect from [chicks] that would take their clothes off for a magazine cover? Then say they want to be "role models" for young women.
LE: Just what we need: First, Britney-style role model low-riding, hip-hugger jeans and too-small trampy t-shirts with no gut coverage, and now, in-your-face Dixie Chick role model nudity with temporary text tattoos....
Last summer, when Britney ruled, I hated leaving the house because of all the sight pollution; this summer when the chicks come out, I don't know what I'll do.

I have a feeling that, since hip-huggers are popular with the gals, the teacher doesn't have to check. I imagine that the thong is sticking up prominently above the waistband.
That's exactly what happened in my eigth grade classroom two days ago. And the boys in the desks around the young lady had a good view and knew exactly what the girl was wearing.

Beware of unintended consequences. If you ban underwear from showing, they will simply not wear any. Problem solved. Simple. These girls and their 'parents' evidently care what shows. You can always go a step farther, if I can see what undergarmants your wearing, your punished, but if I can also tell your not wearing any,(obviousley, if you can tell, this girl is probably exposing herself or something) you will definatley be punished.
The idea behind thongs, is so you don't see panty lines, your not supposed to know they are wearing thongs or not. Clothes on a grade school child should never be that tight that you can see if she is wearing underwear anyway, or if she's not, or if she's got a thong hitched up high.
The other thing is, this rule doesn't go far enough, in that, another look common now, is exposing sports bras. I sure as hell don't want kids exposing undergarmants at all.

From what I see in my neighborhood, mainly college educated, both parents working, is that they don't want to deal with it.
They blow off things that are important to their kids and "make it up" later with extravagent parties. It's really sad.
They ignore the problems they feel that they don't have the time to deal with. It's gonna bite all of us in the butt at some later date.

I have seen the parental neglect up close. My son has two roommates with serious drinking problems. When one of them lost their driver's license, the stepfather arranged for the boys to be picked up by a driver every night to go out drinking. So, the boys are picked up and driven around to the bars in a Mercedes 'til dawn, at least six nights a week.

Without taking sides, or reading 206 posts, I will say education has a lot more to do than with underwear.
However, thongs? At that age?
Cast me Conservative, Please!
Although there should be no judgement; a child at this age wearing seductive lingerie has LIBERALS (Democrats) as parents.

"I have always wondered what mothers were trying to do who painted up their daughters at an age when they couldn't possibly handle the world they were priming them for. What does a mother plan on her eight to twelve year old child doing when dressed as a 24 year old hooker?"
Exactly right! I couldn't agree more. Having just attended HS and JrH graduations, I believe I spotted the thong-wearers mothers in the crowd. One was proudly displaying her own hot-pink thong above her pants, another was showing off her sexy black thong under her thin white pants.....

Wearing a skirt above the knee 150 years ago, when the societal norm was down to the ankles WAS blatantly sexual. Wearing a bikini at the beach was and is blatantly sexual - regardless of how common it is. Blatant sexuality is out of place for such young girls, in any time.
Dress, especially adult dress is often meant to convey a message. Frequently, adult female dress is meant to convey a sexual message. When parents send their young children to school with a sign that says "I am sexy" it is stupid and irresponsible, to say the least.
At that age, knowledge of the type of underwear young girls are wearing is quite easily obtained, legitimately. Girls that age still like to play in the schoolyard and aren't too concerned about modesty. These little girls haven't been taught and aren't very concerned about the niceties of sitting and standing in a ladylike fashion. Young girls (and some adults) are prone to wearing white pants with black underwear, or skirts and dresses that clearly show the outline of the underwear (and yes, regardless of design, sometimes the outline of a thong is PLAINLY visible). Then of course there is the current fashion that says you wear a high-cut thong with low-cut jeans, so everyone can plainly see that you have on that hot, sexy bit of underwear.
All of these are examples of legitimately obtained information wherein the only thing inappropriate is the thong.

So sorry! The characters in this post are purely fictional, any resemblance to real people is purely circumstantial!

Here's one we missed.
Parents who encourage their own daughters (no matter what age) to dress like sluts really irk me.
No wonder my 6th-grade son is disappointed that we won't let him "date" like his classmates do.

Meanwhile if a male adult has a picture of said 6th grade slut on his computer his life is over.

Sorry folks, this is the tip of the iceberg. Parents are what is wrong with education, not schools.
Parents are just pissed that schools won't take the entire surrogate parent responsibilities away from them, so they can get back to The Bachelor.
To: RinaseaofDs
Parents are what is wrong with education, not schools. You are absolutely right. My mom is a teacher and says at some of the PTA meetings only the teachers show up.
When my husband said a few years ago we are moving and we would go from a Christian private school to the public school in the west-side of liberal Montgomery County (Maryland's Berkley), I dug my heel's in deep, very deep.
But eventually we moved and I hate to admit I love the education my kids are getting.
The main reason is parent involvement. Parents here are at the school all the time, (I know, I'm there.) watching over what gets taught and said. If they feel anything is out of line, they scream bloody murder and things get changed. As far as public schools go, I bet this rare.
Newsweek just ran an edition highlightling the top 100 High Schools. All of our's were included.
It's not the teachers, it's the parents. The parents that value education, that makes it work.
