MOSTAR, Bosnia-Hercegovina
(AFP) May 28, 2003

NATO-led peacekeepers in Bosnia said Wednesday they have discovered over three tons of illegal arms at a car dump in the southern town of Mostar.

Acting on a tipoff, the NATO-led peacekeeping Stabilisation Force (SFOR) on Tuesday found seven 250-kilo (550-pound) shells and 15 100-kilo (220-pound) bombs in the Muslim-dominated part of town, SFOR spokesman Tomasso Magistrati told journalists.

He added that a site has been secured until the explosives could be removed.

Mostar, the largest town in southern Bosnia, has remained ethnically divided between its Muslim and Croat communities who fought each other for 11 months during the country's 1992-95 war.

Although the war ended more than seven years ago, many Bosnians continue to hide weapons.

According to figures from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), there have been 1,452 accidents caused by mines and explosives in Bosnia since the end of the war.
