AZ Gov. Napolitano vetoes bill on medication

(Phoenix-AP) -- Governor Napolitano has vetoed a bill that would have required physicians disclosures to parents when prescribing state-paid psychiatric medication to children.

The bill would have required that physicians provide information on, among other things, side effects, expected outcomes and treatment options.

Napolitano said the bill was flawed because the requirements are already standard medical practice and part of the Department of Health Services' policy manuel, because the bill did not define psychiatric drugs and because some of the medications are used to treat ailments unrelated to mental health.

The bill's sponsor is Senator Maryilyn Jarrett. The Mesa Republican says physicians do not need a definition in state law to know what drugs were covered and that some physicians fail to provide the disclosures and improperly prescribe the drugs.
