May 23, 8:01am Former Alabama Quarterback In Critical Condition
Former Alabama and NFL quarterback Jeff Rutledge remains in critical condition with unspecified injuries this morning after a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 40 near Memphis.
The 47-year-old Rutledge coaches high school football for Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville. He played college ball at Alabama, and had a 12-year career in the N-F-L. A Safety Department spokeswoman says Rutledge reportedly lost control of his car and went underneath a truck yesterday afternoon. The truck driver wasn't injured. Rutledge was life-flighted to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis, where a nursing supervisor said he was in critical condition. He played at Alabama under Bear Bryant from 1975-to-78, and had a 12-year career in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams, New York Giants and Washington Redskins. He is also a former assistant coach at Vanderbilt University.
