Pakistani parties seek Taliban-like laws

An alliance of hard-line Islamic parties introduced a package of laws yesterday that would impose on one of the country's four provinces a strict interpretation of Islamic code like that espoused by the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.

The Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal, or MMA, a coalition that controls the government of the North West Frontier Province, seeks to implement rigid codes that would eliminate what it calls ''obscenity and vulgarity'' from society in line with Shariah, or Islamic law.
