Laci's hubby spent secret cash on lovers

With as many as three girlfriends, multiple cell phones to stay in touch and a checking account hidden from his wife, Scott Peterson had a busy secret life, a source close to the double-murder investigation revealed.

Investigators also have evidence that Peterson - accused of killing his pregnant wife, Laci, and their unborn son, named Conner - made a "significant purchase" of items that could have been used to anchor a body, a second source familiar with the case said.

Investigators need to find the items to "connect all the dots," that source said.

The bodies of Laci and Conner washed ashore last month in San Francisco Bay, near where Scott Peterson, 30, had told cops he went fishing Christmas Eve. He reported his 27-year-old wife missing after returning that night.

Peterson, a fertilizer salesman, has proclaimed his innocence. His lawyer, Mark Geragos, has vowed to help him find the real killer.

Lawyer Gloria Allred, representing Peterson's admitted mistress, Amber Frey, urged any other girlfriends to step forward yesterday. Allred also met with prosecutors to discuss their plans to call Frey as a witness, possibly during a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 16.

Peterson, who is being held without bond, showed up in court yesterday aslawyers wrangled over an array of issues, from unsealing document towiretaps.

His bleach blond locks had been shorn to a near-buzz cut that was back to his original dark brown. He said nothing, appearing confident and sometimes flashing a smug grin as the legal eagles duked it out.

Judge Al Girolami heard arguments from California newspapers that want sealed documents - including search warrants and autopsy results - to be made public. He said he would rule this week.

Girolami also threatened to issue a gag order. "Every day we hear about something in the paper that we don't hear in court," he said. "I think we need a protective order."

The judge ordered prosecutors to give Peterson's camp copies of 69 phone conversations that law enforcement intercepted between the defendant and his lawyers in the months before his arrest.

Details of those conversations were disclosed Monday on Fox News Channel, which reported that Peterson told Frey in one conversation: "I know who did it, and I'll tell you later when I see you." That meeting never occurred.

Defense sources have raised the possibility that Laci Peterson was killed as part of a satanic ritual or by a strange man spotted in the neighborhood the day she disappeared.

After the court proceedings, Geragos said the defense team has received several helpful tips from the public that the police also are looking into.

"The big cases tend to bring out the big nuts," he conceded, "but a lot of information we have received has been very good."

Last I heard about the 2 other women was that both defense and prosecution would not categorize them as romantic relationships; has that changed? Are they and the stripper just girl 'friends'?

I've wondered if he originally needed the viagra in order to impregnate Laci.

I've been also wondering along the lines of your #109 comment, in regards to Scott...

"You'll see whatever it takes to bound him over for trial and keep him from getting bail; nothing more."

Don't forget discovery. The prosecution holds back info at their extreme peril.

"And I don't know about you, but I'd be upset if they weren't still investigating; I don't take it as a sign they don't have enough;"

Again - had they had any direct evidence, he would have been arrested long ago. They may well have had a stong circumstantial case when they arrested him (tho the threshhold for an arrest warrant is decidely lower than for a prelim), and may even have turned up new direct evidence in the meantime. We'll get to see that in July.

Plenty of people are convicted on circumstantial evidence; and if they had ONE piece of physical evidence, he's a dead man. I'm betting they have a lot we don't know about.

And if the judge gags them, you can bet Geragos isn't going to waste his time for 2 and a half years without a TV mike in his face; this case will be overy by Thanksgiving.

I'd personally like to know who is paying him.

"I imagine they're running down every dimwitted utterance of Geragos' to prove him a liar, too."

However appealing emotionally that might be to you, it strikes me as a tremendous waste of obviously scarce resources.

"I'm betting they have a lot we don't know about."

All gathered recently, after the arrest, apparently. Othrwise he'd have already been arrested, what?

"I'd personally like to know who is paying him."

Do you have reason to believe that it's not the parents? Do you believe that the source of payment has any bearing on his guilt or innocence?

Oh, right. You have an attorney standing on the street screaming that the police have ignored "tips" from the start, tips he, in fact, claims he has now discovered and given to the police, and the police IGNORE it?

That may be an attorney's dream, but it's not reality. I'd bet my house that if that were the case, you'd be the first one screaming that they concentrated on Scott to the exclusion of all others.

Been there, done that in a courtroom with a thousand lawyers; they ALL blame the police for not running down their "theories."

I don't believe the Petersons have the kind of money that Geragos is going to cost them.

Do you believe that the source of payment has any bearing on his guilt or innocence?

Don't put words in my mouth, Counselor.

'splain this one, please, in view of the fact that the defense waived their right to a speedy trial.

Tell the truth: you're Mark Geragos, aren't you?

You have absolutely NO way of knowing that.

He may have waived his right to a speedy trial now, but something is going to move this case along. Hell, Geraldo said it would be over by Labor Day -- and he is best friends with Geragos; he said Geragos won't do the 2.

And the number one reason: Geragos took this case for one reason and one reason alone: PUBLICITY.

"Don't put words in my mouth, Counselor."

I did not. It was, and is, a simple yes / no question. If you choose to 'splain why you think it's relevant, more power to ya.

I think whether you have money or not influences the kind of attorney you get, yes, I do.

And don't say it doesn't.

Don't forget: Scottie HAD a PD and then he got Geragos; Geraldo said he IS getting paid, and not a discounted rate either.

Lawyer Geragos is a profesional liar, a narcissistic cockroach with no ethics, a mind filled with smug evil, and a gleeful accomplice to murder. A typical shyster and member of the disgusting and totally corrupt lawyer industry.

All this is true. But what do you think of him?

"You have absolutely NO way of knowing that."

Based on the context, I took your comment that "I'm [You're] betting they have a lot we don't know about." to refer to physical evidence.

If that is correct, 'splain me why they would not have arrested him upon acquiring such evidence.

Unlike you, I'm not claiming to know what they have.

You're the one who claimed that all the evidence they have has been found after they arrested him. You have no way of knowing why they waited like they did; we can all speculate from here until the end of time, but until the DA shows what he has, it's all wild speculation.

Which covers most of what defense attorneys say about their case day in and day out. Don't forget, there's no law that says they have to be truthful.

It's been explained to me, by another attorney on this forum, that it's best to not arrest him until you absolutely have to, because of the right to speedy trial. You'd like to develop your evidence as much as you possibly can before you make the arrest. The police couldn't know before they arrested him that he would waive that right.

Quod erat demonstrandum, eh?

Didn't think Geraldo was an approved source of info in this rarified atmosphere that is FreeRepublic.

Do you believe that the source of payment has any bearing on his guilt or innocence?

In fact, I do. As we all know, he may well be found "not guilty" as a result of stunts his attorney pulls; that won't mean he's INNOCENT though, will it?

Unless you want to pretend that every defendant has the same "source" that Scott does, your question doesn't hold water, and is only an exercise in twisted syntax practiced so well by attorneys.

If you don't have access to a lot of money, most high profile criminal attorenys won't give you the time of day, therefore you can't find an attorney good enough to prove you "not guilty," even if you are.
