BBC Chief Vows to End Bullying

Sun May 18, 8:06 PM ET

By Mimi Turner

LONDON (Hollywood Reporter) - BBC director general Greg Dyke has admitted that the public broadcaster faces a problem of bullying management that leaves staff demoralized and insecure, and he has vowed to root out the problem.

In an unusual move, the director general drew attention to the issue of bullying during his corporate-wide address Friday, which was made to the BBC's 20,000-plus staff members.

During the presentation, Dyke aired a film he had produced himself in which BBC staff told of producers who were allowed to get away with unacceptable behavior because they had won program awards that boosted the BBC's reputation.

In the film, one female BBC producer is seen telling Dyke that such behavior is widely tolerated.

"I think there is a real problem at the BBC about dealing with people who treat their staff absolutely appallingly and who are known to treat their staff appallingly," she said. "They have become known as the 'BAFTA bastards."'

Another BBC executive is seen saying that many senior managers at the corporation "bully staff who are too intimidated to complain."

BBC reps confirmed during the presentation that the exchanges had taken place, but declined to identify any individuals who might fall under the unflattering moniker.

Dyke told BBC employees that such behavior will not be allowed to continue, and he announced a range of measures to improve management and staff morale.

His response, announced Thursday, is to invest in a new program to send managers on leadership and creativity training schemes.

I tried to find a better article but failed. The leftist press in the UK did a very good job of quashing the story.

Not exactly...

leadership and creativity training schemes

...more like treasure hunts and building sand castles and wrapping each other in toilet paper etc.

Which will probably rehash many old leadership nuggets:

All this, of course, to avoid the real leadership issue in the BBC: are you (preferrably) a muslim, or perhaps a member of the world socialist party? All well, as long as you're not a conservative, western-minded fellow.

"...a new program to send managers on leadership and creativity training schemes."

ROTFLOL!

Okie-Dokie...

They would be better off allowing the young BBC defense reporter, who blasted their inaccurate war coverage, to conduct a "boot camp" for these so-called managers.
