If by some fluke this drooling imbecile gets her way (say, after a well-timed super-Columbine) she will ignite the second civil war.

" That kind of talk scares the majority of people off into the arms of the gun-grabbers."Well, yer DEAD right....but the scary thing is that this attitude is created and then nurtured along with those "democratic ideals" like worship of the United nations in every public school in the land as part of a carefully structured curriculum. I know, I've spent the last fifteen years in a public school system fighting this evil AGENDA. In fact, my final exams essay question for my senior sociology class next week is going to be:
"What is the difference between an ISSUE and an AGENDA, and how can not knowing this affect your life?"
We have discussed the 2nd Amendment quite a bit in class this semester. I make it clear that I'm a Life Member of the NRA and an NRA certified firearms instructor. I'm very careful not to push my agenda on these kids and they're very aware of this by my conduct in class, welcoming all students who wish to voice contrary opinions without prejudice to their grades. By everything I have seen, this teaching strategy works wonders when it comes to being an "eye opening experience."
BTW, the short answer to this question is:
"With an ISSUE you get all sides and all arguments. With an AGENDA you only get ONE side...that which the promulgating authority wishes you to act upon!"

Trying to decide whether to purchase one of these horrible weapons. Need to decide between 7.62, .223 and .308. I have a very nice scoped (6.5x24) .308, er, deer rifle.
Do I go for a semi-auto that uses the same round or is there a good reason to go with one of the other calibers?

I'm kind of partial to the AR-15 in .223.
That way you can shoot high power rifle in the service rifle category.

Take your pick! I like 5.56mm, but there is much to say for getting a semiauto in your bolt caliber.

It will happen for real or on the small screen and that's all the public needs to see. It will happen after the AWB is allowed to die. Then they will introduce an even stronger California-style prohibition and all the weak RINOS will vote for it with lots of "See, I told you so's" all around. Remember the reaction to Dunblane, Port Arthur, and École Polytechnique. It's coming here.

Crap like this still makes me nervous. Time to buy another AR-15 just to let 'em know we are still interested in this issue, and deadly serious.
To: Abundy
As long as you already like the .308 cartidge, I'd suggest the FN FAL. One of my personal faves, and I don't have to tell you about it's stopping power.
DSA Arms makes some great carbine models. To wit:

See the SA58 above. It is my next purchase instead of another 308 bolt gun. The DSA manufactures a sweet semi-308. Besides, at $10 a mag, it sure beats the M-14 and AR-10 for $30-$60 a mag.

P.S. I know, "Fear a man that only has one gun...he probably knows how to use it.", but a tool for every need.

Depends what you want to do. If you're going for a collector item, find a Belgian FAL in mint condition or a polytech preban AK. If you want a utilitarian weapon you have a lot of good choices available in all calibers. .308, .223, or 7.62x39 all have specific characteristics that may make one more desireable than another. The .223 round is a relatively weak round. It's little bullet has a low ballistic coefficient which makes long range use undesireable, although possible at ranges up to around 500 yards (beyond that, it just doesn't have enough energy left to do much damage). The .223 produces a severe wound cahnnel at close range impacts due to a very high bullet wobble (yaw) while passing through flesh, often resulting in what is called a tumbling effect. the 7.62x39 (AK47) round has quite a bit more energy than the .223 and retains more punch at long ranges. It's still a farily light (short) bullet and even in a boattail (russian style) has a low BC which means shorter ranges (6oo yards, maybe a little more). The 7.62 bullet will also "tumble" while passing through flesh, but not anywhere near as fast as a .223 will so that you may not get much more than a 40 or 50 degree wobble in the short path through a human target (but it does make a bigger hole since it is a bigger bullet). At close range a 7.62 will not produce as severe a wound channel as a .223, but it is more likely to penetrate packs, gear, car doors, etc and still have enough energy left to do some real damage. A .308 is heavier, has a better BC and, therefore, a 1000 yard potential. The higher velocity of the .308 over the 7.62 will give more penetration and do more damage (more severe wound), but it still doesn't yaw like a .223 at close range. I'm talking about standard milsurp type fmj ammo in these examples. Soft points and hollow points and custom loads are a different story.
If caliber is your determining factor, decide what the most likely use will be (shooting rats? dogs? people? helicopters?) and go towards the weapon from there.
As far as weapons, you budget is the limit. For long range shooting a bolt action is much cheaper than a semi auto in the quality needed for long ranges. The FAL, M14, Garrand rifle, make fine long range .308 rifles, but you need to look for a $1500 or so quality rifle (the cheaper ones aren't near as precision as the more expensive ones). A top end AR or a Daewoo (the best IMO) will work for .223 long range shooting. For 7.62, there are no good long range firearms that I am aware of. It just isn't a good long range (600+ yard) round and has never been used by militaries that stress precision shooting. Someone else may have knowelege I don't have about this round and long range use though.
For combo use as a reasonable hunting rifle, short range battle rifle (3-400 yds) and makeshift Urban assault rifle, consider the SKS. It's cheap, reliable, fairly accurate, and potent enough (7.62x39) that the Viet Cong were able to knock down helicopters with them (once in a while). The 7.62 ammo is very reliable, dirt cheap, and almost anyone can afford to stash away several thousand rounds in sealed tins that will still shoot just fine in your grandchildrens days.
The AK is my choice for close combat urban warfare. it's a little heavy, but it's short, almost unbreakable, extremely reliable, and cheap. If you have the bucks and want an AK, think about a pre-ban underfolder. The underfolder is more of a combat weapon than a fun target type weapon though, so if you want to do a lot of target stuff a fixed stock would be better (and a lot cheaper). Even the $300 AK's are fine weapons, so don't look just at the high end sutff. Fires the same ammo as the SKS, but much faster (20 round detachable mags vs. 10 rd fixed) and less accurately. Mags for this weapon are still plentiful and cheap. Stay away form the ak74 because of the ammo situation ( It's not as common as the 7.62 ammo). but they are a neat AK variant for collecting or shooting.
Second choice for urban assault use would be a shorty AR. CAR-15 or variant, preferably pre-ban with a collapsing stock. Absolutely essential is to have it reworked by a top end AR armourer to make it completely reliable and keep spare parts and know how to install them.
In any event, you should probably find some people who own these various weapons and try shooting all of them under various conditions (extreme heat and cold, rain, wind, night, day, while rapelling a 600 ft cliff, etc. Any condition you would normally find yourself using the weapon in.) Or just do what I do and buy a couple of each to have on hand if needed.
IMO, FWIW.
