Elmer Gantry (1960) copied from Memorable Moments from Great Movies! "Elmer Gantry (1960) is an entertaining melodrama with memorable performances. It is the controversial telling of Sinclair Lewis' novel regarding the charismatically engaging, but scandalous Midwestern salesman turned preacher in the 1920s."

Elmer Gantry (Burt Lancaster) is a huckster who sells shoeshines and vacuum cleaners. Gantry is lustful, coarse, loud, ambitious, motivated by an easy dollar, golden-tongued, and often drunk. His first memorable appearance on screen in a speakeasy demonstrates his high-energy eloquence with words in this impromptu Christmas sermon:

..."You think, uh, religion is for suckers and easy marks and molly-coddlers, eh? You think Jesus was some kind of a sissy, hey? Well, let me tell you, Jesus wouldn't be afraid to walk into this joint or any other speakeasy to preach the gospel. Jesus had guts. He wasn't afraid of the whole Roman army. Think that quarterback's hot stuff? Well, let me tell you, Jesus would have made the best little All-American quarterback in the history of football. Jesus was a real fighter - the best little scrapper, pound for pound, you ever saw. And why, gentlemen? Love, gentlemen. Jesus had love in both fists! And what is love? Love is the mornin' and the evenin' star. It shines on the cradle of the Babe. Hear ye, sinners. Love is the inspiration of poets and philosophers. Love is the voice of music. I'm talkin' about divine love - not carnal love"..

GREAT MOVIE, too bad you missed it, you must be very young?

I agree that we have to search to find actual things which we know, which make it sound planned. Knowing what he might have done beforehand is so hard. No one was paying attention, apparently. (Except, uh, maybe Laci.)

I have to concede that it's his behavior SINCE Dec. 24 that is so glaringly guilty looking. All except for the stuff with Amber--which of course was BEFORE the disappearance. Whether the defense likes it or not, a mistress might indeed be a motive for killing. Even for a guy who had committed adultery before. Since Dec. 24, he sold her car when theoretically she still might have come back. Unheard of. He tried to sell the house. Even more unheard of. He broke off contact with the Rochas once they were onto him about the affair. Some would say that's normal b/c of course they'd be disgusted with him. I don't think so, b/c if he were innocent, the fact of Laci's disappearance, and the need to find her and learn what happened to her, would transcend all the stuff about the affair.

Tonight I heard the Rochas say on TV (Greta V. S.) that he won't let them in the house; that they haven't been allowed in there since January (except for Amy's horrible trip in there with the police.) Why?

There is no doubt that at the New Year's Eve vigil for his "missing" wife, Scott was standing there grinning like a Cheshire cat, and looked very much like he was cracking jokes. The pics are all over the place. He refused to sit with Laci's family at that vigil.

He shunned the media in the beginning, and the whole family made excuses for him. What he was doing, was hiding, in the hope that Amber wouldn't see him and realize he was the HUSBAND of the missing woman. When the cameras did catch him, you could see him walking at the speed of light, and he wore his cap ALWAYS--wore it down low. And he shaved the sides of his head so you couldn't really see any hair from under the cap. So one wouldn't necessarily know what his hair looked like, if he was balding, etc.

He wrote a very strange note to the searchers at the search center. This was in early January. To paraphrase, it said, "Every day as I see searchers come in, I tell Laci about it. Early this morning, I felt she could hear me. She thanks you. --Laci's Husband."

Notice his name was not written there. Probably didn't want Amber to see the name "Scott" on TV. Never mind the weird notion that he could "talk" to her--as one would talk to dead relatives.

Then there's that shot of him running, with the dog. All hale and hearty, less than a month after his wife "disappeared."

People at the search center said he would tell them, "Gotta go now, gotta go put up more fliers." They found out that on those occasions he was actually leaving for a round of golf.

When there was word that remains had been found, he was called by the Rochas. He begged off, saying he was very busy in San Diego.

When he held his LA search event, he didn't even stay at the hotel lobby hosting it for the whole time it was going on. He stuck his family with that duty. A hotel guy there who'd seen him in both Modesto and LA said that in the later times, he started to really like the camera. (Once Amber was known to be onto who she'd really been dating, Scott was never seen with the cap again. B/F that, he was never seen w/o it.)

Then there was the time Scott's employers came in from out of town. This was fairly early on. Scott wined and dined them at the bar of a hotel in or near Modesto. It was the same hotel that let the Rochas use it as a search center. Scott was seen having a high old time with his business associates, partying late into the night. Then he said he was taking them to tour San Francisco. This was within one or two months of the tragic disappearance.

Laci had two cats. Her friends found them hiding in some bushes near her house, half starved.

And of course we know Scott went right on calling Amber, all through the disappearance and well beyond it, almost as though nothing had happened.

I just wanted to say that I enjoyed reading your detailed reply to my (much) earlier post. You seem to be pretty well up with this stuff.

Thanks. It's the crazy stuff he's done since Dec. 24 that we've all been able to see. Since December 24, there's been plenty of hard evidence that he is a callous creep who even seemed glad to be rid of his own son.

Sometimes it's in my best interest to just take a break from these threads. Today is one of those days, right after this reply.

Since we haven't gone to Preliminary trial yet, and I am drawing my conclusions based on what the media wants us me hear, albeit I had my own doubts from day one about Scott. Amber is not even a player, she's a victim.

Ally, you're just getting yourself in deeper trying to explain the Amber comments away...Quit bumping the thread and just move on :~)
