So if we had an outbreak at a hospital in the US, no one could report it to the general public?

It doesn't matter whether they "can" or not. If it happens, word will get out. Doctors and nurses talk. Within 24 hours, people would be canceling elective surgeries, refusing to go there to visit sick friends, demanding to be taken to other hospitals in emergencies, the local TV stations would start calling ... the hospital would be FORCED to set the record straight one way or the other.

Judith Anne asked earlier if anyone knows of a single hospital in the US that admits that it has SARS patients. Do you know of any? We have over 60 probable, and over 300 suspect cases. Where are they?

I don't know, but someone just posted this, which proves my point. People talk.

So far the only one I've heard talking about what is supposed to be happening there is Astraea Kelly, an ultra far left activist who calls herself "birdsong of the morning wind" or some such cuteness. The Sierra Times story is just a rehash of what Astraea has written and published on some other web sites.

As her story has been out for a couple of weeks now, and no one seems to be coming forward with any verification, a healthy doubt seems in order.

BTW, Astraea is also the one who has claimed that a couple of white heterosexual males from her hospital went to Thailand (or Cambodia) and may have had sex with prostitutes who also may have had sex with gibbons from the jungle. She insists that the government should finance a hunt of these gibbons to see if they are passing on SARS to the local prostitutes. Astraea does not mention how much the prostitutes were charging the gibbons.

Let's not forget this is the same Astraea who stole the wallet of an FBI agent who visited her.

How does one steal an FBI agent's wallet?

She said (on an IMC-newsroom listserv) :

Well, I came home this morning and guess who came visiting sometime last night? The FBI. Some idiot dropped his wallet outside, and guess what's in here... The Oakland counter-terrorist task force agent's cards, along with several New York agents and a Muslim connection, and the SF agent is all in here. What a dip shit!

My understanding is that all probable cases are actually in home-quarantine where feasible.

Astraea seems to have a vibrant repertoire of tall tales.
