For 22-year-old University of Southern Mississippi student Kyle Weston Magee of Mize, summer break will be a little different than for his classmates. While his fellow students seek a little fun in the sun, internships or simply a chance to sleep late and study less, Kyle's seeking the Republican nomination for the office of state commissioner of agriculture and commerce.

Most of these state agriculture commissioners try to promote the sale of farm goods abroad, inspect gasoline pump and produce scale calibrations, enforce pesticide laws, etc. Many of these commissioners become entrenched, as Bob Odom in LA and the former Commissioner Jim Buck Ross in MS.

Well, good luck to the fella. I assume there hasn't been a GOP Ag Commissioner since Reconstruction. We failed to elect one over in AL (though one did serve from '95-'99 before being defeated) last November.
