May 25, 2003 -- With 13 years of crippling economic sanctions finally lifted, Iraq is set to resume oil exports next month, an interim government official said yesterday, a major step toward rebuilding the country's economy.
"By two to three weeks, Iraq will be back in the market," said Thamir Ghadhban, director of Iraq's oil ministry, at a news conference. "It will take a few weeks but we should be producing 1.3 to 1.5 million barrels per day by the middle of next month."

With the oil and a few billion in dollars and gold sitting around the country and all of those palaces I find it hard to consider Iraq a "country gripped by poverty." Most of the people have been kept in poverty in order to keep them under control. It will take some time to drag the citizens out of poverty and teach them to live in the real world. This, of course, will be violently opposed by the religious leaders and some of the politicians who want to maintain their power over the people.
