STAMFORD A man was being held by immigration authorities after patrons at a busy downtown restaurant said they saw him park illegally and quickly walk away, police said.
The restaurant and an adjacent office building were evacuated Thursday evening. A search of the car turned up aviation-related documents including flight charts, schematics of airport terminals and runways and information on flight lessons, said police Capt. Richard Conklin.
The Joint Terrorism Task Force, comprised of the FBI and other federal and state agencies, planned to question the man, Conklin said Friday.
"The aviation materials piqued our interest," Conklin said. "He claims a friend of his was taking these flying lessons."
The man identified by Conklin as Noor Wali, approximately 43, of Stamford was detained in Hartford by immigration authorities. He has not been charged in Stamford with anything other than illegal parking, Conklin said.
Mike Gilhooly, a spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, would say only that the man whom he would not identify was being held because he was in the country illegally.
FBI officials could provide no details on the case.
Conklin said the man pulled behind the restaurant at about 6:45 p.m. and got out of the vehicle "very abruptly." He said the man parked in an "obvious no parking area" and left on the run.
The man's actions prompted residents to call police, Conklin said.

Oh.... Part of the "Wali" family that came to America on the Mayflower.... But I guess it was part of a connecting "flight" from Pakistan.

... but detained in Hartford... I guess that makes him "of Hartford" now, for a while.

Poor guy. An illegal alien parking illegally.
If he had done the same thing in front of the welfare office with a Mexican license plate, nothing would have happened.

The folks in the restaurant obviously profiled the fleeing suspect. Shame! Shame! When they saw a ME alien park in an illegal space and fleeing on foot, their suspicions were allowed to ignore the terrible consequences of profiling. We need to establish a gulag or two to re-educate these fools.

These same folks probably wouldn't have done this if the license plate had been from Mexico.
Can you imagine an illegal being held because he is illegal??? And a parking offense did it??? This is just too much for me.
