I don't understand why you would say that. Remember, this was just a missing persons case at that time, not a high profile murder case that might bring publicity seekers out of the closet. It seems intresting that the cops didn't bother to check it out.

I think if you look at the timeline,12-24 Laci missing.12-26 LE get search warrent for Laci and Scott's house.12-30 a dog handeler had already said she had NOT left the house by foot but by vehicle.12-31 Det. Ridenour said she did not walked away voluntarily,no one ruled out as a suspect.Also Det. Buehler said LE suspect foul play.1-4 Authorities use cadaver sniffing dogs to search Berkely Marina.

From the timeline, I think you can see by Jan 1st when this report was called in that quite a bit of investigative work had been done by LE. I think LE took appropriate action, I think this couple wants their 15 minutes of fame.
