Blair affirmative action trickle-down.

The Times chose the coward's way out. Instead of explaining the differences between the Blair and Bragg situations, they punted. They chose not to bear the slings and arrows of those who would charge racial double standard. Were the Times hiring and employment practices racially color blind, these situations would not have happened.

The Times made their bed, now they are not only lying in it--they are inextricably tangled in the bed sheets.
