Board Fires Coach Accused Of Having Sex With 2 Students (WXII ThePiedmontChannel.com ) [Full text] A boys' high-school basketball coach charged with having a sexual relationship with two students was fired Thursday. The Mt. Airy's Board of Education unanimously voted to dismiss Kemp Phillips. Police also arrested Nick Freitag, the boys baseball coach, and Michael Barnes, the girls junior-varsity basketball and varsity softball coach. Freitag and Barnes quit their jobs earlier this month. All three men are scheduled to appear in court June 26. [End]
May 17, 2003 - Ex-teacher sentenced for molesting children ***A former city substitute teacher convicted in January of molesting local children and exposing them to alcohol and pornography, was sentenced to a five years in prison Friday.Thomas D'Aurelio, 35, of Sassacus Road, offered no apologies during his sentencing hearing in Superior Court. He stood almost motionless as a victim's attorney read a statement detailing the effects of his abuse."Five years will never be enough for what our families have been through," a parent wrote in a statement read by attorney Ned Collier.***
One in five US adolescents has sex before turning 15*** About 20 percent of adolescents in the US have had sexual intercourse before their 15th birthday -- and one in seven of the sexually experienced 14-year-old girls has been pregnant, according to a new report released on Monday by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.
The report, an analysis of seven studies conducted in the late 1990s, offers a comprehensive look at the sexual activities of 12- to 14-year-olds, a group often overlooked in discussions of adolescent sexuality.
"These are not new data sets, but I think this is the first time we've put together all these numbers in a way that tells the story about young people this age," said Sarah Brown, director of the campaign, a nonprofit, nonpartisan group based in Washington.
"Remember, a lot of researchers, as well as a lot of people who fund research, are reluctant to ask questions about sexual behavior to very young people, so there's not an enormous amount of information about this age group.
"This is a wake-up call that the efforts that we make toward young people have to start early, that teachers looking at a class of 13-year-olds can't assume they're in a state of latent innocence."

Unfortunately many teachers are engaged in removing their innocence.

Who would send their child into a public school?
People like me. With 5 of them to pay for the options are limited. We stay in very close touch with what is going on. My guess is many of the victim kids parents are very uninvolved on a day to day basis....

That conclusion isn't based on reality. Yes there are kids that are sexually active that are prey to school personnel but there are many that have good parents that have become the victims of these men. I personally know of two cases and both girls were from good families where their parents WERE involved. In both cases the teachers were music teachers. These girls were in the band .. parents thought they were keeping their kids busy and involved in school out of trouble. NOT.

My guess is many of the victim kids parents are very uninvolved on a day to day basis....Unfortunately when some of these crimes are discovered the teachers are let go and they move to another state and are hired, continuing to engage in crimminal activity. It's a hell of a thing to have so many child sexual predators in education, isn't it?

An 18 year old having sex with a 15 year old falls under the category of aggravated child molestation? Give me a break! Was the girl the local factory owner's daughter or something? I'm inclined to agree with the "black and white" issue. Fifteen years for this? Senior boys having sex with freshmen girls used to be common place. Not that's it's a good thing and Not that I was so lucky.

...convicted of statutory rape and aggravated child molestation... This guy got a raw deal. We have a gross contradiction in our legal system. If this girl had become pregnant and wanted an abortion, the law would treat her like an adult, i.e., the parents would have no say whatsoever in the abort/let-live decision.
Also, there's a big difference in teacher-student sex and student-student sex.

Who would send their child into a public school? I send my children to public schools. What are you trying to insinuate here?

Unless there is more than is in this story, it is very hard to defend the court's decision. The judge notes he has no recourse but still it doesn't seem like something that should have been taken to trial.

.......What are you trying to insinuate here? That public schools, besides not being up to good academic standards, are not safe.
To: Cincinatus' Wife
Well my kids are doing just fine academically and their schools are very safe. I get tired of snobs like you looking down on us "public school" types.

I'm with you, Sam. It depends on the school. Both my kids went to public schools and did well. I am happy with the education they received.
Of course, you must keep an eye on what's happening, but there are still some teachers who actually are interested in teaching and care about the students and their subjects.
Having said all this, I am opposed to the idea of public education, but here in NH the property taxes are high enough, primarily for schools, that economically as long as the education was good it made sense. The boys were serious football players as well and wanted to attend the high school.
So far as the original topic of this post, the penalty is ridiculous and harmful to the kid, and does the kid, the school, the community no good. And if it was consensual sex, how come there is no penalty for the girl?
