If you trace his ancestry, and it is available online here (and others I'm sure):

I didn't see anything which seemed to be an American Indian connection. Presidential ancestry is well documented, and I don't think it'd be too difficult to find out the truth. He may just be spouting what he was told, although someone in his position should find out if something like that is true before publically proclaiming it.
