Wall Street Journal cites 3rd-party source; U.S. officials skeptical

NBC, MSNBC AND NEWS SERVICES

May 23 —  Saddam Hussein’s eldest son, Uday, is alive and considering surrendering to U.S. forces, according to a report in Friday’s Wall Street Journal. The paper cited a third-party source who also said Saddam is alive, although in questionable mental health.

THE REPORT said Uday is hiding in a Baghdad suburb, and has asked through intermediaries what charges he would face. According to the unnamed source, Uday is afraid Iraqi citizens will kill him if they find him. A relative of the Hussein family told the source Saddam is also in suburban Baghdad, the Journal reported.
U.S. military and intelligence officials in Washington said they had no information on the report, but they told NBC they doubted the two were hiding out on Baghdad.
One official added, “It’s always possible Uday is negotiating privately with some third-party intermediary, but if he is we’re not aware of it.”

"Saddam is alive, although in questionable mental health."

Then, obviously, nothing has changed.

So you think he's dead? OK then, tell me what the results were on the excavations of the two supposed "decapitation strikes"? We haven't heard a word about them, nothing, zero. Not a word, you would think there would have been round the clock coverage of it once we took Bahgdad, that they would ask at every press conference. Instead, nothing. Were any bodies recovered? Whose bodies?

If I were a poor Iraqi I might be selling these "leads" to credulous reporters...

"...according to a report...Saddam is alive, although in questionable mental health.

I guess watching US soldiers having a smoke on the veranda of his palace and using his golden bathrooms pushed ole Saddam over the edge. ~~ LOL ;*D

It's time for the Wall Street Journal's "Opinion Journal" to point the finger at itself by throwing this one in under the banner of "You don't say?" This is only newsworthy across the media radar screen because it's actually a revelation to them that his mental health is questionable.

Yeah...it's tough to sell such 'leads' to incredulous reporters. Though I'm not sure there are many of those left....except when they are reporting on what a conservative has to say.

By chance has Jayson Blair been recruited by the WSJ?

Re the so called 3rd Party sources:

How to detect lies in your newspaper re Anonymous Sources! (USA TODAY OWNER PUBLISHER/23 MAY 2003)

* The anonymous source, if in fact one exists, generally is a coward who tells more than he or she knows.

* The reporter permitted to use such sources often writes more than he or she hears.

*The only sure way to separate fact from fiction is to ban all anonymous sources. If your newspaper uses them, be very, very skeptical.

the "They're still alive!" team is spewing propaganda. So tasty even the WSJ prints it.
