I know the KC-135's are 707 mods. I was betting that the new tankers would be 767 mods. As fixit showed us, that's right, sounds like the KC-767A. Apparently italy and Japan had previously signed contracts.

Good choice too ... though I'd still like 4 engines.

There is also a version of the 767 that performs as a modern AWACS platform. Interestingly, this also offers an upgrade to the 707 based E-3.

The Japanese operate these as well.
