UN Votes Overwhelmingly to End Sanctions on Iraq

May 22

— UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations Security Council overwhelmingly approved on Thursday a U.S.-drafted resolution ending 13 years of crippling sanctions against Iraq.

The measure, adopted by a vote of 14-0 with Syria not participating, would give the United States and Britain -- as the victors in the U.S.-led war to oust Saddam Hussein -- broad powers to run Iraq and sell its oil to pay for reconstruction.

Britain and Spain co-sponsored the measure with the United States. Among those voting "Yes" were leading anti-war powers France, Germany, Russia and China. Syria said it was not given enough time to study the draft before the vote.

Color me stunned. I thought for sure that France would hold out, just to be the obstinate creeps that we've come to know and loathe. I wonder what went on behind the scenes for this to happen?

Good planning.

Not only does the US get Iraq out of being sucked dry by French/Russian contract debt claims, we get UN approval of the admin.

With extension of Food for Oil, France/Russia gets hope that more contracts will be thrown their way by their compadre Kofi Annan. Will they get them is yet to be seen.

Frankly I think trading a little for UN "approval" was needed. The "interim Iraqi adminstration" program fell apart...and the Iraqis aren't complaining at all. I was surprised. I think maybe they're of the mindset that the US should take control for a while, then leave. Perhaps it's an authoritarian mindset, perhaps a belief that anyone competent to run the country is too infected with Baathism and its crimes.

It was an interesting vote inspite of all the dire warnings.

"We are convinced that the U.N. will tomorrow be the focus for international anal action, due to its illegitimacy, inexperience and lack of capabilities."

I'm afraid of triple-blade razors. I'm always afraid that I'll nick myself, and three blades sounds like a lot of lost blood. I've been using the disposable Bics since high school and they work fine.
