I think the first enlisted person that a new officer salutes traditionally receives a silver dollar.

Yup.

New Ensigns carry silver dollars in their pockets and toss them to the first people that salute them.

All the little kids come running out of the stands, which is the best part. They salute anything in a uniform with their hands outstretched.
