Two weeks ago I posted this guy was high on drugs to so recklessly concoct and spread such fabrications ....and I was right.

Yep, you hit the bullseye about the drugs.

"...and I know I shouldn't be saying this, I fooled some of the most brilliant people in journalism.

He's also grandiose in his immorality. That statement makes me think less of him. And saying he "fooled" others indicates that he wasn't acting in conformity with the corporate culture of the NYTimes, but outside it.
