He didn't allow for a publicly-funded divinity school on the Univ of Virginia because he thought it was a violation of the First Amendment.

Jefferson assured a Christian religious school that it would receive “the patronage of the government” (Letter of Thomas Jefferson to the Nuns of the Order of St. Ursula at New Orleans on May 15, 1804, original in possession of the New Orleans Parish. )

What are the details? What's the context of the letter? What did he mean by "patronage"? Is there a primary source paper trail that answers these questions?

There certainly is regarding the Univ of Virginia, the teaching of religion there & Jefferson's many thoughts on the matter -- and they all show that Jefferson & the Board of Visitors (trustees) felt a publicly-funded divinity school on the campus of the Univ of Virginia would be a violation of the First Amendment.
