Sounds like someone who wanted attention. Why on earth would you travel if you had any suspicion you had SARS and where on earth would she have contracted it? I'm sorry, but the amount of time this is being given in the US is beyond reason. There have been NO confirmed SARS deaths and few confirmed SARS cases.

It sounds like she may have been on a international flight and it stopped in NYC in route to RIA. Those loooong flights are killers. You can easily leave your destination feeling fine and 10-12 hours later be sick as a dog. It has happened to me several times. (obviously, not with SARS)
