The first movie never had a very wide audience appeal,It made about 374 million worldwide, the budget was 64 million. Not exactly small change.. its breakout appeal was the reason two expensive sequels were made.

What I mean by a not very wide audience appeal, was that the film made money by many multiple viewings, rather than many seperate people seeing the film only once. The film had incredible appeal to those who saw it, I don't know anyone who has seen the first movie only one time.
