I've been thinking exactly the same thing. Wouldn't it have been refreshing if her statement at the news conference had been something like the following?
40 years ago I committed a grievous sin when I entered into an adulterous affair with Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy's husband, and I have spent the past four decades trying to atone for that sin. To anyone in the audience who cares to listen [and especially to those who don't], I say: If you are a married person committing adultery, or a single person engaged in an adulterous affair with a married person, you must cease this behavior immediately, and if you are a married person contemplating adultery, or a single person contemplating an adulterous affair with a married person, not only must you not commit this sin, but you must forbid yourself from so much as contemplating it in the first place.
