I don't find the two statements inconsistent. But then, the first statement seems to strike you as violent, which strikes me as extremely silly. As I said, they're varmints. It's not like they're songbirds or endangered species or something. Huge difference, at least to me.

If my dog succeeds in getting one (real well meaning and loving but DUMB dog), I will keep that playing dead stunt in mind before intervening.

Well, just don't assume it is too late to be saved like I did! I debated putting in my garbage, in my burn barrel... couldn't think how to dispose of it, not realizing it was really quite alive.

My ex had a garden. Home early one day, saw this white thing scramble from under a low deck. Okay, wife's been complaining about plants being eaten...must be the woodchuck.

I bought a havahart and finally trapped that white thing.

Told the wife I took care of it, but it was really rat looking..."That was a opossum!". "Oh" says I. "But it came
out from under the deck..."

For those that need to know: Broccoli for woodchucks. Peanut butter for squirrels, cats, skunks, and um, opossums.

Wish we had armadillos in California. I've never seen a live one in the wild.

Armadillos are one of God's stranger looking creatures. I once had a small one in the back yard I looked after since he/she appeared to be an orphan. It rooted around in the grass somewhat like a pig (that's what its nose looks like). Anyway, after several weeks it moved on. In states where they live, you see almost as many dead on the highway as possums.

Never had possum. I have no desire to eat one either. I have had bear, deer, I think every fowl, fish including shark, and of course, the standard bovine. I won't touch veal. I am looking forward to eating ostrich this summer. But, the thought of possum just doesn't do it for me.

Have you ever tried to shoot one of these things? It takes two or three shots from a 22 to kill one.

Hate to tell you this but I've lived in Texas for 17 years and I've never seen a live armadillo. Don't think there are any except for the dead one they keep moving ahead of me on the road. Eeeeeeeeeek!

I was walking in the woods of southern Indiana when I was a teenager and came across a dead feral hog or wild boar. I didn't get too close because it was very pungent and I noticed the body cavity seemed to be moving. I thought it was maggot infestation. Wrong! I shot the carcass with my .410 shotgun I had with me and about a dozen possums ran out from the rectal area of the carcass.

I later learned from my Grandfather that the avenue of choice into a carcass for a possum is via the rectum. They eat their way into the good stuff.

Here in Alabama we have possums and the ever popular, "Ninja Possums" aka Armadillos. Speed bumps mostly.

My dogs killed an armadillo last night and left it by my truck as a present this morning. I won't touch the damned thing; they are some of the nastiest critters going.
