Here (with minor wording variations to account for their various positions) is what I have sent this morning to all of the following:

Tom Delay
Bill Frist
Butch Otter (My Rep)
Mike Crapo (Idaho Senator)
Larry Craig (Idaho Senator)
The GOP Leadership
President Bush

Representative Tom Delay
242 Cannon House Office Building
Washington, DC 20505

Majority Leader DeLay,

I am writing you in your leadership role in the House of Representatives. I have also written my own representatives here in Idaho, the leadership of the Senate and the President.

The reason for this letter has to do with the so-called Assault Weapons Ban that is set to expire this year. I have always felt that this legislation was blatantly unconstitutional and aimed at setting the stage for much larger firearm bans and ultimate confiscation by those who created it. This is born out by the current legislation those people are trying to introduce in the Senate that would extend the AWB and vastly enlarge it.

I will share with you what I have shared with my own representatives. If this ban is extended and/or enlarged, my support for the GOP administration will cease for the upcoming election. This may sound extreme to you, but there comes a point when one cannot, when one must not, support the erosion of fundamental rights and principles … even if some of those doing are viewed positively in other areas.

Mr. Delay, erosion of fundamental principle is bad, whomever does it. In fact, there are some who believe that it is far worse and harder to stop when it occurs piecemeal over an extended period. I was greatly saddened to hear of this administration's support for the extension of this useless and purely political law.

In either case, I will not support it, or anyone who does. Please ensure that the AWB dies the death it should have experienced when it was first voted on. I admire President Bush and much of what he has accomplished, but I cannot and will not sit back while a Republican administration and congress contemplates extension of this bad law.

Sincerely,

Jeff Head
Emmett, Id 83617

I am urging everyone I know to do likewise.

Jeff
