Christians are not to be doormats either, we are humans and deserve respect as a creation of God! No, I think Christians are supposed pretty much to be door mats. Our kingdom is not of this world.

"Tell you what, you mind your damned business and I will mind mine...and if I catch you on my property, I will kick your ass all the way back to Michigan!" Certainly, that comment is either the closest (or the farthest) from the Spirit of The South.
Jefferson Davis is a direct relative of mine. My first ancestors were among the first white men to colonize Plymouth, Virginia.
I was always taught the Golden Rule came first, with the fist in the velvet glove not far behind for the lesser inspired ones.
Southern hospitality and dignity were never the real targets of the north - it was her blooming wealth that was so offensive, not her people.
Surely, you - being a Southerner have not forgotten such comments as yours led to the Civil War, have you?

No, I think Christians are supposed pretty much to be door mats. Our kingdom is not of this world. We may not be of this world, but we are still alive in it. We still have to eat, sleep, breathe, speak...
We have the God given enalienable right to life, liberty and persuit of happiness, do we not, what do you do to defend that? Have it taken from you? not hardly

I'd like to see a source for this; I think it is apocryphal. So would I.
I've never run across such a comment by Lee before.

Southern Hospitality:
Anyone that comes to my door is welcome to anything in my house for as long as they need to be there. Be it an over night stay, the bathroom, a cool glass of water, a meal...what ever.
The Northern attitude:
*Note* there typically isn't any hospitality
Anyone that comes to the door is a beggar and needs to be shunned or shot. Do not take from me what is mine, and I own everything. If I cannot get it by my own means, I will litigate to get it because I am a spoiled brat!

"it's Southern Heritage that started it all. All this BEFORE the United States was a true nation, Virginia was Soverign! We are still a Commomwealth, not a State."
Give me a break, Pennsylvania & Massachusetts are Commonwealths too. You will also find a lot of the Founding Fathers; Adams, Franklin, Revere.. came from areas other than virginia (Pilgrams, Plymouth Rock, Independence Hall, signing of The Declaration of Independence, Boston Tea Party, Valley Forge, Lexington & Concord).

"Don't worry. The percentage of Southerners who are still ticked off about losing the Civil War is small, and getting smaller all the time as they die out."
Au contraire. The South isn't ticked off about losing the Civil War; hell, we knew we couldn't defeat the North: What we sought was simply to be left alone, but the Yankees invaded and we had to fight to protect our homes. What the South IS ticked off about is Reconstruction, which was an abomination. Oh, didn't they tell you anything about Reconstruction in your Northern schools? I suspect they didn't, and if they mentioned it at all, they didn't tell the truth. The truth is that the North literally raped and starved the South during Reconstruction. Theirs was a very brutal occupation. In fact, the North's occupation of the South was by far the most heinous and oppressive occupation the U.S. has EVER undertaken against a defeated enemy, except perhaps the Indians, and there are many accounts that the two were about equal. Did your schools ever tell you about the cannibalism many Southerners had to resort to in the South after the surrender? Nope? Didn't hear about that, did you? Guess your teachers kind of left that one out, eh? I just wanted to give you a little history. I am an American first, but I do hold dear to my Southern heritage. None of my family ever owned slaves (and slavery is evil, and an abomination, but it was also a common pratcice throughout much of the world at the time, so you have to view things from a historical standpoint, not by the standards of today; hell, if you want to view things from today's standards then you'd even have to condemn the North, who owned (gasp!) guns, and went to church, and thought gay was a word denoting light-hearted happiness, and who certainly have looked upon abortion with horror and disgust, and see it as an act of murder). But my ancestors DID fight for the South, and I am proud that they did, that they fought against what they saw as a tyrannical oppression. But we are no longer at war with one another, and thank God we are not. Now, we are all Americans, and hopefully we can live together as such.

I have read that exact quote several times, though I cannot recall where. I believe it is genuine, but cannot say for sure.

The South isn't ticked off about losing the Civil War; hell, we knew we couldn't defeat the North: I don't think that is right. Jefferson Davis for one said the war would continue as long as necessary.

YOU are a Christian? I think I'll call my pastor and renounce my faith this instant! Spending eternity anywhere near you would reduce the distinction between heaven and hell to a trifling.
