The revisionist evaluation of historical figures using contemporary standards is appalling - and far too many people lack sufficient historical knowledge to evaluate it to begin with.

Abraham Lincoln came to symbolize the Union, or the North. Yet, Lincoln was from Kentucky, way South and West of Virginia. Robert E. Lee, was from Northern Virginia. Which man had the Southern mindset? Which man was educated? Lincoln had one year of schooling. So, he became a lawyer. Lee graduated first in his class at West Point.

Robert E. Lee fought in the Mexican campaign, and the Civil War. Lincoln went into the field one afternoon. Having had his fill of war, Lincoln retired to political manipulation, which is what Southern politicians do best. But I digress. Robert E. Lee fought for Virginia and Virginians fought for him.

The revisionist evaluation of historical figures using contemporary standards, isn't just appalling, it's plain ludicrous. Who could fill Robert E. Lee's boots anyway -- around Richmond Virginia. What would the Boy Scout patches read? The Hillary Clinton district?

All of what you say is true but you left out the fact that Lincoln was self educated and was a very bright man in my estimation. He spent his adult life north of the Ohio river. His wife, Mary Todd, was from Lexington, Ky. and was very familiar with slavery being raise in the upper crust of Lexington.

Long live the memory of Lee, Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln. Being a "northerner" I had to put in Lincoln though I think he was on the wrong side of states rights vs. federalism.
